CPI(M) terms US report on Nandigram as 'interference' in India

The CPI(M) today termed a US official report referring to Nandigram violence as "interference" in Indian affairs and asked Washington to concentrate on alleged gross human rights violations in Iraq and by Israel in the Gaza strip.

At a press conference, CPI(M) leader Mohd Salim said

"we don't think the US is the custodian or champion of human rights. Some people here think the Bush administration is so, but we do not suffer from any such illusions."

This is hilarious coming from the same group  of people who were in forefront to influence American State department to deny Mr. Narendra Modi, , a diplomatic visa and to revoke his existing tourist/business visa! Once they achieved the objective they had gleefully declared

CAG  considers the denial of visa to Mr. Modi as a clear victory for supporters of human rights and justice in the U.S. and in India. It sends a clear message that perpetrators of religious and political persecution can be held accountable for their actions through dedicated work by broad, inclusive coalitions.  Indian and U.S. groups share a long, common tradition of battling for human rights, and securing justice for the oppressed that CAG and its partners will continue to build on.

In Nandigram case also, Amnesty International had accused the West Bengal government of colluding with CPM party workers in Nandigram and failing to institute an impartial inquiry into the violence. The report released by the rights watch group said.

“The manner in which the government of West Bengal failed to take positive action to address the issue suggests that the government was acquiescent in the human rights abuses by the armed supporters of the CPM during the November violence,”

The investigating agency has told the Calcutta High Court in its status report that the CPM workers dressed as policemen had fired at protesters, witnesses were being threatened by them and that the authenticity of the medical reports handed over to it was questionable.

Now it is Hilarious to CPM is taking "High Moral" ground that US is interfering in India's affair! Where was this morality when they worked overtime to get visa of a Indian Chief Minister Denied!

CITU members beat worker to death "for Striking"!

According to Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) the trade union arm of CPM its Workers right to Strike. However, I guess what is left unsaid is in West Bengal it means "its the sole right of CITU"

Yesterday, members CITU chased and assaulted labourers of a lesser union, leading to the death of one of them.

Contract labourers belonging to the CESC Thika Mazdoor Sangh had called a ceasework on Monday demanding their recognition as electrical workers.

Eyewitnesses said around 50 members of the Thika Mazdoor Sangh were travelling towards the CESC unit near Ruby Hospital in the afternoon when they were chased by CITU men in five trucks.
As soon as the labourers got off near the CESC unit to distribute leaflets urging co-workers to join the strike, they were surrounded by the CITU men, who started beating them up.
One of the labourers, Ramparvesh Singh, got separated from the others and was pinned to the ground. The 42-year-old received serious head, chest and neck injuries and died at National Medical College and Hospital. At least 19 others were seriously injured.

Kerala High Court: Centre should Intervene and send Central Forces

It seems that even the High Court of Kerala has lost their faith in LDF Govt. in Kerala. The Kerala High Court observed that the only solution to end the violence in Kannur district seemed to be a timely intervention by the Union government by deploying sufficient forces that

“will not yield to the political or plutocratic clout by those in powers and out of power.”

Justice V. Ramkumar expressed the hope that there would be a

“gubernatorial move to apprise the Central Government of the urgent need for a permanent prophylactic action to curb further bloodshed and killings in Kannur District where manslaughter is a competing sport.”

The court made these observations while ordering an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the murder of Muhammed Fasal, a National Development Front (NDF) worker in Thalassery. The petitioner, Mariyu, alleged that her husband was murdered by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists because he had defected to the NDF from the party.

The court said commented on the case by saying

There had not been “any intelligent investigation” into the case.

Which is the case with most of the Political murders executed by CPM  when they are ruling

Kannur: Tread with Caution, CPM on Prowl here

Kannur located in north kerala is famous for its folklore such as theyyam, kathakali and also for its martial arts called kalaripayattu. It is also (in) famous for Political Murders which started way back in 1950's. In last 15 days, 07 Persons have lost their lives due to political violence between the CPI-M and RSS. The latest bout was triggered when CPM activists  "free after Kottayam Congress" attacked RSS  Karyavahak, K V Sumesh.

In Kannur, The most heroic leaders live on walls, as faded, framed memories of martyrdom.  It all started way back in 1958.  In 1958, the Mangalore Ganesh Beedi factory shifted to Mangalore (from Kerala) due to labour problems created by the Communist unions. Innumerable workers including Communists - lost their jobs. RSS played an active role then in rehabilitating these workers by securing alternate employment for them. Consequently, many Communists joined the RSS.  The RSS struggle against the imposition of Emergency also provided impetus to RSS Growth in kannur. There were only 17 or 18 shakhas in Thalassery Taluk of Kannur district. Post-Emergency, the number crossed 55.

CPM responded by attacking Political Opponents.. The initial fights were between the CPM and the Socialist Party led by former minister P R Kurup. Then CPM vs Congress, CPM vs Muslim League and now CPM vs RSS. Vadikkal Ramakrishnan, a swayamsevak, was the first victim in 1968 . In 1979 a college student, Panunda Chandran, was murdered inside a RSS shakha. Since then, Kannur has been limping from murder to murder. Unconfirmed reports put the number of deaths due to political violence at 177 - 63 in BJP-RSS camp, 62 CPM cadres, 40 Congress workers and 12 others.

The worst was in 1981, when RSS and CPM workers spent two weeks engaged in a bloodbath that claimed 24 people: 12 RSS workers and 12 from the CPM. Most gruesome of all was the murder of  Jayakrishnan, a teacher of mathematics at Primary School, vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He was axed to death inside the classroom, in front of his terror-stricken students, on December 1, 1999. In the case of  Jayakrishnan Teacher, A local court sentenced five CPM men to death, the Kerala High court upheld it. The Supreme Court, which let four of them off for want of evidence on appeal later, observed:

“The police investigation, for whatever reason, had not been conducted properly. The slipshod manner in which the investigation was carried out was amply borne out from the records. Despite the fact that a teacher in the classroom before the students of tender age had brutally been murdered, the police did not appear to have shown a very keen interest in the matter. It was expected that the teachers (in the school) would speak out the truth, but they did not.”

The killing fields were more or less calm during the Last  five years of the Congress-led United Democratic Front government. The previous government had brought an end to the madness by giving the police the power to deal with the perpetrators of violence. The police ended the annihilation spree by acting tough against the leaders, who ordered the killings for their political gains. The political hit gangs seem to have returned with a vengeance with the CPM-led government coming back to power. The LDF government replaced all the  upright officers with pliable ones, who allowed CPM activists to interfere with the law and order functions.  Kannur range Inspector General of Police A. Hemachandran and Superintendent of Police Mathew Polycarp were  among the victims. Jail Director General of Police (Prisons) M.G.A Raman was shunted out after he insisted on shifting the prisoners affiliated to the CPM from Kannur jail to Viyyur central prison following violence inside the jail. The Kannur  jail, which used to be CPM fortress barely a few months ago. The LDF Govt lumped together the  “comrade convicts” and they were virtually running the prison themselves, assaulting fellow prisoners of other parties and enjoying the good life.

Last year,  National Crime Records Bureau says Kannur has logged the country’s highest number of riot cases in 2006 — 737 cases, averaging more than a couple every day

The state government says it will do its best to put and end to the killings, but it’s a well known fact that unless the CPI-M and the state government allows the police to act independently, Kannur will remain to be Kerala's killing fields. Well this might be "distant dream" considering the fact that it was the current Chief Minister who had famously thundered during 1999 Mayhem

“attackers would be repaid with interest and compound interest”.

Marxist-nationalist JVP calls for boycott of Indian goods and Look who is their friends in India

The Marxist-nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has threatened to call for a boycott of goods from India. They allege that India is interfering" in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka

If the JVP does call for a boycott of Indian goods, and enforces it, the loss to India will be tremendous. India exports goods worth $1.8 billion to Sri Lanka every year. The island is India's largest trading partner in the South Asian region. India is the fourth largest foreign investor in Sri Lanka, having pumped in $500 million. India had also given Sri Lanka credit to the tune of $281 million in the past four years.

No call by the JVP can be taken lightly in the current political context, because it has 38 members in the Sri Lankan Parliament and the Rajapaksa government is dependent on the JVP MPs for its survival.

It would be worth remembering that twenty years ago, in 1987-88, the JVP had tried to enforce a boycott of Indian goods in protest against the India-Sri Lanka Accord and the 13th amendment.

Now lets take a look at JVP's friends in India. Well no surprises there. Its the usual culprits CPM and CPI.

CPM has been inviting JVP for their party congress for last three decades. However, this year they didnot invite them due to their alliance with DMK in Tamilnadu. The JVP, which stands for a “unitary Sri Lanka”, wants the Tigers wiped out, whether through military combat or ideological means.  While, CPM has identified Tamil Nadu as one of the “priority” states where it can improve its base, and is keen to avoid alienating the large sections of Tamils sympathetic to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The CPI, however, has invited the Sri Lankan party to its party congress, to be held in Hyderabad from March 23 to 27. JVP parliamentarians Bimal Ratnayake and Ramalingam Chandrasekhar are expected at the conference.

Sheila Dikshit: Left owes its allegiance to countries other than India

Shiela Dixit one of the Honest faces of Congress has finally taken the bull by horn and Said what no other Congress person has dared to say till date.

She was speaking at a public meeting in Kochi, Kerala. She said

The Left owes its allegiance to countries other than India. Are they against their own country? Why do they oppose it for India and not for their supposed friends China and Russia?... they do something, mean something else and say a third thing....... They are not the nationalists we thought they were.

It will be interesting to see the reaction of these Pekingese(they are dogs by their own admission) . for the unaware, Pekingese  also known as "Beijing Royal Court Lion Dog" is a famous Chinese Breed of dog were bred mainly for appreciation and enjoyment by the Chinese  aristocrats, and the common people were forbidden to raise. Kerala Court speeds up probe against CPM government

A special court here Monday asked the state vigilance department to submit within a week the findings of last year's probe into two corruption scandals worth Rs. 30 million involving Deshabhimani, the official newspaper owned by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The fresh directions came following a request by petitioner P. Rahim to the court alleging that the CPI-M-led government was stalling the investigations.

The court had ordered an enquiry July 13 last year.

The cases pertain to Deshabhimani collecting Rs. 20 million by way of a bond from lottery kingpin S. Martin and allegations against its general manager K. Venugopal (since expelled from the CPI-M and dismissed by the newspaper), charging him with accepting a bribe of Rs.10 million from a controversial private financial institution that closed down in 2006.

LDF Supported MP Sebastian Paul Oppose Trivandrum High Court Bench as its aimed at appeasing Hindu vote bank

Sebastian Paul, MP has opposed the demands  to setup High Court Bench in Trivandrum as according to him

"a High Court Bench in the capital city as solely aimed at appeasing the vote bank."

Previously, Sebastian Paul, MP, has written to Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh opposing  the move to shift the office of the Cashew Export Promotion Council (CEPC) in Kochi to Kollam.

Is Mr. Sebastian propagating division of Kerala on religious lines South for Hindus, Middle for Christians and North of Muslims!! If we take that justification to logical conclusion then I guess what "Vote Bank" is Govt. trying to please with  the Prestigious Vallarpadam Terminal Project.  (take a look at this website)

Or is he more worried about his votebank in Ernakulam Parliamentary Consistency? Is he worried that his "votebank" would not be happy that "the Kerala's only High Court Bench in Ernakulam" will lose its prominence if there is another bench in Trivandrum.

The Extend of Influence of Ernakulam Votebank can be seen from Last 07 Parliamentary Election Results of Ernakulam Parliamentary Constituency.

Smoking Buddha is Ok But CPM will you please stop Smoking us

The West Bengal environment department may have banned smoking in public places, but last week Yahoo News Reported how  CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee merrily forgot the order, walkingimage in to a realty expo, where he exhorted realtors to go green, with a cigarette in his  hand. Guess it was a matter of creative freedom, to use a filmstar’s imageexcuse. In any case, the CM does two double packs of 555 daily. In fact, when the PWD put up notices along the walls of Writers Building declaring the corridors a no-smoking zone, the ministers’ chambers, including the CM’s, were spared.

I can understand CPM Leaders breaking Laws as Laws are meant for Low Life Minions like us. But what happened to their avowed hatred for MNC Companies? 555 is famous brand from the British American Tobacco Company (BAT). Also, Why is Buddha not smoking Dinesh Beedi which CPM owns in  Kerala?

That brings me to interesting topic of CPM Run Kerala Dinesh Beedi.

Think Communism and Keralites immediately recall that legendary cocktail of black tea, beedi and parippuvada which powered generations of comrades. Yet, the beedi workers who formed a vital force that propped up the Communist movement are now an unwanted lot. The CPM-run Kerala Dinesh Beedi (KDB) which used to employ thousands of workers and brought respectability to the trade is today facing an existential crisis.

The 36-year old Kerala Dinesh Beedi (KDB) located in Kannur District of Kerala was brain child of CPI (M). It is still run and Managed by CPI(M).  However, as a sign of changing times CPI (M) emphasis is shifting from traditional industries where hundreds of thousands of workers are reeling under pressure and many on the verge of collapse to to the hi-tech IT park/Amusement water theme facilities/AC auditorium/super speciality hospitals/ resorts/hypermarket etc.

CPM central committee member M A Baby tried to Justify this move by saying

"It is part of the party’s policy to utilise resources in the capitalist system for the benefit of the downtrodden”

He even tried to explain it Ideologically

"The party views it as a dialectical relationship between struggle and compromise in the path to revolution"

What ever it means....

As the survival of the KDB was very much in doubt, the management(run by CPI(M)) decided to introduce austerity measures such as job cuts, freeze on bonus and gratuity etc.  The management sought the reduction of the production cost considerably by cutting working days to three a week {from six}. Disgruntled by the prevailing confusion and tensions, the workers of the KDB recently took to agitational path and blockaded the society's headquarters in Kannur - a rare event in party- controlled institutions. The also tookout a march to the KDB depot in Pinarayi, home turf of CPM State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, in protest against the party’s neglect of their plight.

The CPM washes its hands off the Dinesh Beedi workers controversy saying some anti-party activists were behind the campaign to tarnish the party’s image whereas the beedi workers’ crisis was driven by market forces.

I still fail to understand why is Rs 4000 Crores rich CPM NOT Bailing out Kerala Dinesh Beedi. Afterall, we have heard several times CPM demanding Bailout of Sick Public Sector units. Why is CPM not using same yardstick in its own premises?

CPM and "Money"Chan Connection

Meet Manichan, the abkari contractor who was awarded life imprisonment along with his two brothers, vendor Hayarunnisa in the sensational serial hooch tragedies in the state which killed 36 persons and disabled nearly 100 others in October, 2000.

Newspapers has alleged that almost a dozen prominent CPI(M) leaders had reportedly received lakhs of rupees from Manichan during the last LDF rule under E.K. Nayanar. That the reports had some   substance is proven from the fact that CPI(M) had then to expel Mr. Sathyanesan, their Trivandrum District Secretary from the party on this charge . Also, former CPI(M) MLA Kadakampally Surendran was accused of accepting a bribe of Rs.50,000 from the contractor.  But all the other important leaders of the CPI(M) were absolved by the party with the same explanation that “receipts were issued” and hence no corruption was involved.

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, the Home Minister and Central Committee member of CPI(M), issued statement in the State Assembly that there were no evidences other than newspaper reports before the government to charge sheet K. Venugopal or anybody else involved in the scam.

CPM and the "only" one crore Bribe

Meet Ex- Deputy General Manager (Marketing) of the Deshabhimani Mr. K.Venugopal, a  close confidant of both CPM Party Secretary Pinarai Vijayan and Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, the Home Minister.

He helped himself with rupees of 1 crore to get a government (i.e. LDF )decision in favour of the some prominent Business persons. Now lets see who are these prominent Business Persons.

The amount was given by LiS, a fraudulent money chain firm. LiS is charged with the criminal offence of cheating the public with money doubling offers and of flouting Reserve Bank regulations. The Kerala police raided office of LiS then sealed its offices. Prosecution procedures were also started. In a span of 3 years before its closure, this  firm had amassed a fabulous sum of 600 crore from the public. However, Surprisingly the case against LiS, investigations and litigation proceedings, all proceeded sluggishly. In a few months of LDF rule, the investigation officer was changed more than once, each time the charge being passed over to lower ranked officers. Even the investigating officer was attacked in the court premises reportedly by the juniors of the advocate of the defendant, when the former was going to the court to hand over the case file, asked by the latter. The advocate of LiS was M. K. Damodaran, who had been the Advocate General during the former LDF ministry, under E.K.Nayanar and thus, obviously a  close associate of CPI(M) leaders and the party. While the case with Damodaran acting as defence counsel was heading towards a standstill, things took a different turn. Not long after LiS had been closed and sealed, another firm by name ‘Jyothis’ came into existence almost  under the  same proprietorship and started operations in the same line as that of LiS. Within the last 4 months, ‘Jyothis’ has accumulated deposits worth Rs 10 crore and has made its mark as having put an insertion on the front cover of the DYFI’s organ in Malayalam.

It is so palpably clear that a firm could not have come to these points without high-level administrative and party support, that the government is compelled to close down ‘Jyothis’ too.

So this was the episode of LiS, the firm from which the CPI(M)’s party daily functionary,  venugopal, took a bribe of only rupees one crore.

Communist Party of Martin

I am not sure how many people have heard about Santiago Martin. He is 55-year-old Coimbatore-based lottery agent earning  more money every day than new economy czar N R Narayana Murthy or old economy titan Dhirubhai Ambani.

Every day, Martin sells -- through his Martin Lottery Agencies -- some 12 million lottery tickets across the country. He is the sole distributor for 28 Sikkim government lottery schemes, 17 Tamil Nadu schemes and six Arunachal Pradesh schemes.

He is the sub-distributor for the Bhutan government lotteries as also for many state governments like Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and West Bengal.

So far, so good. The only worm in the apple is an on-going investigation of Martin and his company by the income tax department.

The charges listed against Martin include:

    • His company bribed officials of state governments like Sikkim to ensure that prizes are announced on unsold tickets. Rules stipulate that the unsold tickets should be returned to state government lottery departments. But agencies like the MLA do not return tickets. The result: millions of rupees are won by the agent himself.

    • In June 1997, Martin's son Charles won Rs 5 million on the Azad Hind Bumper Lottery run by the Nagaland government. Martin claims his son had bought that particular ticket. But IT officials allege the draw was cleverly fixed with the connivance of officials.

    • In April 2000, the 10 fourth prize winning digits of the Sikkim Yellow Weekly and the Bhutan Kalpataru Lottery -- the two most popular lotteries distributed by MLA -- were identical. Officials say it is a clear example of how lottery draws are regularly rigged.

    • The home ministry has obtained a number of documents that detail the business links between Martin and Moni Kumar Subha, the Congress member of Parliament from Tezpur in Assam. Subha is Nagaland's lottery king. Officials allege the duo have joined hands to fix all the lotteries in the northeastern states.

Last heard,Santiago Martin was  in the hiding for several months and the police are in search of him nationwide.

With all these allegations, you would expect "self righteous" parties like CPM to keep away from them especially since V S Achuthanandan had waged many a war against the lottery mafia when he was Opposition leader. V.S.Achuthanandan had  alleged collusion between the online lottery tycoons including Santiago Martin during the last UDF ministry, on the ground that apart from doing fraud and snatching off an amount at the rate of Rs 30 crores per day on account of the outside lotteries, they were evading tax to the tune of Rs 9,000 crores in tacit understanding with the UDF government. He promised that once LDF government came to power, this money would be recovered and all the foul plays stopped.  Moreover, LDF State finance minister TM Thomas Isaac disclosed in the Assembly that Rs 8760 crores lottery tax dues were yet to be recovered and 80 percent of that amount was from Santiago Martin!

And what was happening  under LDF ministry? As always  CPM actions didnot match Words. The CPM organ Deshabhimani collected Rs 2 crore worth of bonds from Santiago Martin. The expose was made by the leading Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi with copies of the bond certificates issued in the names of Martin’s two sons. The advocate who used to appear on behalf of the lottery mafia in chains of cases, suddenly became the Government Pleader under LDF and started representing prosecution.

The newspaper’s general manager E PJayarajan(of Pinarayi Vijayan Faction) claimed in a clarification that there was nothing new in newspapers issuing bonds for collecting funds. Like others, Deshabhimani used to collect development funds through deposits and bonds from regular advertisers during funds crunch.

However, in a u-turn next day, Mr Jayarajan swallowed what he said and stated that Deshabhimani had taken no funds as bonds and that “funds used to be collected as advances from advertisers and adjusted later in advertisements’’.

CPM hit back by launching a blistering attack on Mathrubhumi both inside the assembly when the Opposition raised the scandal and also outside. Party MLA P Jayarajan said in the assembly

“Mathrubhumi is a yellow paper since it publishes baseless charges without sense or direction,’’ .

    Privatization: CPM double speak

Reacting to the railway minister’s drive towards privatisation of container trains and depots, outsourcing of railway services and privatisation of railway property , CPI(M) Politburo said in a statement

“The CPI(M) is opposed to these privatisation measures announced in the Railway Budget and demands that these should not be taken forward,”

CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta said later

"We staged a walkout against privatisation and Bengal being neglected. I don’t think the Kerala MPs understood what was happening, so they stayed on,” .

C.S. Sujatha of the Kerala CPM virtually echoed Gurudas when she said

“we strongly oppose the privatisation moves”

Earlier in the month, They gave a clarion call to Oppose Airport Privatization move by UPA Govt.  Describing the government decision to privatise Delhi and Mumbai airports as ‘shameless surrender’ to private parties, CPM threatened to intensify its agitation against the move and also take up the matter in Parliament.

CPM  politburo member Brinda Karat said after addressing agitating workers at the New Delhi airport

"Government has taken a very wrong decision. They have put all ethics of transparency and justice aside and taken this decision. It is not only a matter of privatisation, it is a matter of ignoring 22,000-strong AAI organisation,"

With all this, you would assume that Left Parties of India are in forefront of opposition to privatization in India and you would assume that Indian Airports are protected from "Private Devils"

Now Guess where is India's first privately owned airport being Build! Surprise Surprise...  its in West Bengal.  Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd. (BAPL) today signed a Technical Services Agreement (TSA) with Changi Airports International (CAI) for the upcoming airport within the Durgapur Aerotropolis project. This Greenfield project will be India’s first privately owned airport, a part of the USD 2.5 billion Durgapur Aerotropolis.
