Communism will be finished in India within five or 10 years

On the background of SNC-Lavalin saga, Experts and ex communists believe that communism in India will be finished in India in next 5-10 years. There have been allegations of corruption and misappropriation of money dozens of times earlier and But this is the first time that the once highly disciplined CPI-M has washed its dirty laundry with such gusto in public.

Eminent historian M G S Narayanan, who was once known for his Marxist moorings and past headed the prestigious Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), says:

Communism will be finished in this country within five or 10 years. Don't assess the current development as an isolated one. The CPI-M has faced an ideological crisis for several years. It passed through different stages and now it is in its final stage. People have rejected communism in almost all countries. Even in China, communism exists only in name. Such a situation will come in India also.

Chekkutty, the founder editor of the CPI-M-owned Kairali TV, says

The bureaucratic establishment that the Communist Party has become will not survive for long. The party seems to have become a massive tree without any deep roots. It is likely to wither away. At the same time, the working class need a strong political party. There is likely to be a new political formation to replace the present communist establishment.

Even ordinary workers of CPM are fedup with the way CPM operates in Kerala. Sajoy George, a district leader of the CPI-M- linked Kerala School Teachers Association says

I am very much worried over the developments. It will defeat the spirit of communism. The party should be above persons. The two leaders failed to understand the sentiments of the masses. This episode has done big damage to the party. They must end this fight.

To make matters worse, The Communist Party of India-Marxist of today has apparently decided to adopt the supreme sycophant late Dev Kant Baruah, then president of the Congress, displayed by solemnly declaiming in the Emergency era that 'India is Indira and Indira is India

CPI-M Central Committee member E P Jayarajan recently pronounced

'Pinarayi Vijayan means the Communist movement.'The present move (by a section in the party) is to finish the Communist movement (in the state). And for that they have targeted Vijayan and are trying to finish him off.'

If you want to see how far the cult of personality has entered the halls of the CPI-M look no farther than the party's Web site. Nestling along such weighty matters as the party positions on the Union Budget, World Trade Organisation negotiations, and the Iran nuclear issue, there is a new section called 'Lavlin Case -- Facts'. (Couldn't the CPI-M at least spell 'Lavalin' correctly?) Why should the CPI-M even have an official position on an allegation against an individual member?

Kerala Court speeds up probe against CPM government

A special court here Monday asked the state vigilance department to submit within a week the findings of last year's probe into two corruption scandals worth Rs. 30 million involving Deshabhimani, the official newspaper owned by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The fresh directions came following a request by petitioner P. Rahim to the court alleging that the CPI-M-led government was stalling the investigations.

The court had ordered an enquiry July 13 last year.

The cases pertain to Deshabhimani collecting Rs. 20 million by way of a bond from lottery kingpin S. Martin and allegations against its general manager K. Venugopal (since expelled from the CPI-M and dismissed by the newspaper), charging him with accepting a bribe of Rs.10 million from a controversial private financial institution that closed down in 2006.

Smoking Buddha is Ok But CPM will you please stop Smoking us

The West Bengal environment department may have banned smoking in public places, but last week Yahoo News Reported how  CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee merrily forgot the order, walkingimage in to a realty expo, where he exhorted realtors to go green, with a cigarette in his  hand. Guess it was a matter of creative freedom, to use a filmstar’s imageexcuse. In any case, the CM does two double packs of 555 daily. In fact, when the PWD put up notices along the walls of Writers Building declaring the corridors a no-smoking zone, the ministers’ chambers, including the CM’s, were spared.

I can understand CPM Leaders breaking Laws as Laws are meant for Low Life Minions like us. But what happened to their avowed hatred for MNC Companies? 555 is famous brand from the British American Tobacco Company (BAT). Also, Why is Buddha not smoking Dinesh Beedi which CPM owns in  Kerala?

That brings me to interesting topic of CPM Run Kerala Dinesh Beedi.

Think Communism and Keralites immediately recall that legendary cocktail of black tea, beedi and parippuvada which powered generations of comrades. Yet, the beedi workers who formed a vital force that propped up the Communist movement are now an unwanted lot. The CPM-run Kerala Dinesh Beedi (KDB) which used to employ thousands of workers and brought respectability to the trade is today facing an existential crisis.

The 36-year old Kerala Dinesh Beedi (KDB) located in Kannur District of Kerala was brain child of CPI (M). It is still run and Managed by CPI(M).  However, as a sign of changing times CPI (M) emphasis is shifting from traditional industries where hundreds of thousands of workers are reeling under pressure and many on the verge of collapse to to the hi-tech IT park/Amusement water theme facilities/AC auditorium/super speciality hospitals/ resorts/hypermarket etc.

CPM central committee member M A Baby tried to Justify this move by saying

"It is part of the party’s policy to utilise resources in the capitalist system for the benefit of the downtrodden”

He even tried to explain it Ideologically

"The party views it as a dialectical relationship between struggle and compromise in the path to revolution"

What ever it means....

As the survival of the KDB was very much in doubt, the management(run by CPI(M)) decided to introduce austerity measures such as job cuts, freeze on bonus and gratuity etc.  The management sought the reduction of the production cost considerably by cutting working days to three a week {from six}. Disgruntled by the prevailing confusion and tensions, the workers of the KDB recently took to agitational path and blockaded the society's headquarters in Kannur - a rare event in party- controlled institutions. The also tookout a march to the KDB depot in Pinarayi, home turf of CPM State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, in protest against the party’s neglect of their plight.

The CPM washes its hands off the Dinesh Beedi workers controversy saying some anti-party activists were behind the campaign to tarnish the party’s image whereas the beedi workers’ crisis was driven by market forces.

I still fail to understand why is Rs 4000 Crores rich CPM NOT Bailing out Kerala Dinesh Beedi. Afterall, we have heard several times CPM demanding Bailout of Sick Public Sector units. Why is CPM not using same yardstick in its own premises?

Bird Flue Update: CPM machinery stood in the way

  1. In many villages, people led by ruling party leaders resisted culling operations. Margram Panchayat, for instance, is under the control of the Congress. The CPM backed popular sentiment of the villagers hoping to cash in during the ensuing panchayat polls in May-June. Sanjiv Barman, the zonal committee secretary of Rampurhat Block II said: “If we do not come to their support at this critical juncture they will not support us in the ballot box. We are therefore raising the issue of inadequate compensation.” Result: many villagers refused to give up the birds for culling.
  2. Leaders complained of lack of an awareness campaign before culling operations began. Often, culling teams went to villages at odd hours without any prior information and villagers were not prepared to hand over the birds. “No one told us about the disease and one morning, they came and demanded my poultry. The birds were out. I asked them to come another day. I kept waiting with my poultry but no one turned up,” said Sheikh Amzad of Buropithtola in Margram.
  3. In some places like Nalhati, culling teams were beaten up. A day after culling operations began, local CPM members took out rallies in a number of villages in Margram, Nalhati and Mayureshwar areas, demanding better compensation for affected farmers.
  4. In Parulia village, when the team reached on January 16, about 100 people, led by Ananda Bagdi, the local CPM Panchayat Pradhan, resisted the culling. They had two demands: culling teams had to take their permission before entering the village and an upward revision of the compensation. The culling teams backed off.
  5. There was no effort on the part of CPM leaders to use their fabled party network to spread awareness about the dangers of the virus and co-operate with authorities.
  6. CPM state secretary Biman Bose issued an alert yesterday — a week after the outbreak.* As the bird flu virus spread, the Ministers were distracted by the CPM party congress in Kolkata. Both the ARD and the Health Ministries are held by the CPM. It was only on January 20, five days after official announcement of the outbreak, that Anisur Rehman, state ARD minister, visited Birbhum and Margram.
  7. Surya Kant Mishra, state health minister, visited Bolpur in Birbhum on January 22. No other minister visited Ground Zero.

Chicken Flue Situation in West Bengal Update

23/01/2008

Bird flu spread to many areas of West Bengal on Tuesday as the Centre increased the target of number of poultry to be culled to nearly 15 lakh.

Animal Husbandry Commissioner S K Bandopadhyay said

It is being controlled. It is not under control," he said while replying to a query whether the bird flu situation was under control.

News

On other side,

As concerns over bird flu mounted, delegates to the CPM's state conference had a treat at high tea on Wednesday: chicken kebabs and fish rolls.
The bird flu alarm was first confirmed on Sunday evening, coinciding with the launch of the party conference and the administration went into day-long meetings the next day. For three days, afternoon tea meant assorted snacks.
But, on Wednesday, as if to show solidarity with the thousands of small farmers who are resisting the culling, the cooks hired for the conference were asked to make chicken kebabs.

News

I guess people has taken the Ministers Message to heart

Not willing to incur any financial loss because of the outbreak of bird flu, well-networked cartels in West Bengal are smuggling out chicken and poultry products from affected areas, even sending consignments to neighbouring states to minimise the loss. This could be one of the reasons why the deadly virus has spread so fast — from one district in the beginning to almost eight districts now.
