Kerala Government has banned distribution and production of colas. Great initiative, considering the risk it posed to public health due to high levels of pesticide in them.
"We cannot make our people drink poison and pesticide just because we want industries here. This is not the policy of LDF," said Vaikom Viswan, LDF convenor.
What he conveniently forgot is Kerala is the biggest consumer of alcohol in the country with an average consumption of 8.3 litres per person per year. Five years ago there were only 14 alcohol outlets. Today there are 350 all run by the state owned Kerala Beverages Corporation. the government is minting money from sale of alcohol, Rs 2000 crore a year to be precise.
